Relocating Overseas: A Big Challenge

International traveling or moving to another country is popular nowadays. It doesn’t even involve high-class, wealthy people anymore; meaning just because you have the chance to go abroad doesn’t mean you have the riches. Going abroad is not all about pleasure and leisure. Some people actually make that hard sacrifice to be away from their loved ones back home because there needs to be a breadwinner in every family in order to survive.

Moving to another country is a much more complicated and difficult task than just moving from one city to another. Why? The answer is obvious. How will you move all your belongings? How can you find trustworthy movers that can bring your things overseas without a problem? Which one is a better idea? Bringing oversized items like your couch, a few shelves, a refrigerator, TV, etc. overseas or purchasing new ones once you get there?

Regardless of whether you are alone, single, married, and with kids, moving overseas is stressful. A common question that comes to mind – where do I even start?

Here are some tips to help you out:

An overseas move requires additional planning and preparation, much more than if you were just planning to move from one city to another. So if you are planning to move abroad, you need more than a month of preparation. Most relocation companies that offer rates for an overseas transfer often require a 4 weeks’ notice in order for them, too, to prepare for your move.

If you know anyone in the country that you are going to move to, it would be best to ask them if there are any requirements like a visa, certain vaccinations.

Also, ask about the culture in that specific country – it is better to know now, than have a culture shock when you are already there. If you don’t know anyone in that country, another good thing to do would be to research on the internet about that country.

Make sure that the house you are moving to is safe. Also ensure that the environment is safe too, but always have options open for safety measures.

If you are going abroad for a job transfer, then your company would most likely arrange for your move. If not, they could at least recommend a trustworthy moving company. But if you are on your own, or your company can’t recommend a moving company, then it would be best to ask your friends or family members who have had experience in moving out of the country, or you could search on the internet for one.

Once you’ve researched and have a few good options on your plate, call each of them for information. Don’t just go for the moving company with the cheapest rate, if you are low on budget, or the one with the most expensive rate, because you believe that the more expensive, the better (even the high class moving companies can make mistakes). You need not only information on their company, but feedback and references from other people too because this is a big job. The movers you hire will be transferring your belongings from one country to another and the last thing you would want to happen is when you arrive at your destination, you find that there has been a damage or loss among your belongings.

Do not settle for phone conversations alone with the moving company you have decided to hire. Arrange for a meeting at your house and have them look at and assess your possessions. However, don’t meet with them just once. Meet with them a few times to establish a comfort level between you, your family and them. This is crucial because you need to have that feeling that you can trust your movers with your things.

If you have a spouse and kids, search on the internet, or at least when you arrive at your destination, go school hunting. You could also ask around for advice and references on some decent schools in the country.

Moving overseas is indeed a one of a kind journey. It could be overwhelming, but instead, maintain a positive outlook on it. Think of it as a new adventure, a new chapter in you and your family’s life. When it comes to relocating overseas, knowledge is crucial; knowledge is power. If you succeed in preparing yourself and your family to the best of your ability for the move abroad, all of you will definitely enjoy a new adventure and that experience could turn into one of the most memorable events you and your family can always recall later on in life.
